NTT DoCoMo’s Mobile Society Research Institute announced on August 28 that the usage rate of LINE among seniors has exceeded the usage rate of email for the first time. While the usage rate of email has remained in the 60% range since 2019, the usage rate of LINE has been steadily increasing.
The survey was conducted using paper questionnaires targeting men and women aged 60 to 79. In 2018, the usage rate of LINE was only 28%, while it reached 76% in 2023. Additionally, Facebook had a usage rate of 12%, Instagram had 11%, and Twitter had 8%.
The survey also revealed gender differences in usage rates. Men had higher usage rates for email, Facebook, and Twitter, while women had higher usage rates for LINE and Instagram. The Mobile Society Research Institute analyzed that “men spend more time using PCs compared to women, while women spend slightly more time using smartphones. The difference in devices used may be related to the gap between email and LINE usage.”
